Matt Sawchak focuses his practice on complex litigation, antitrust and appeals. He has argued at all levels of the federal and North Carolina court systems, including the U.S. Supreme Court. Matt uses strategic approaches to handle complex cases efficiently. Many cases have one central issue that, when decided authoritatively, resolves the case. Matt works to identify that issue early and get it resolved in the client’s favor. Before joining Robinson Bradshaw, Matt served as solicitor general of North Carolina from 2017 to 2020. He oversaw the state’s civil appellate litigation, including litigation in the U.S. Supreme Court. Before beginning public service, Mr. Sawchak was a senior partner at Ellis & Winters LLP in Raleigh, North Carolina. There he focused his practice on appeals, antitrust, and other complex litigation. The North Carolina State Bar has certified Mr. Sawchak as a specialist in appellate practice. Mr. Sawchak has chaired the North Carolina Bar Association’s Appellate Rules Committee, which makes recommendations to the North Carolina Supreme Court on possible amendments to the North Carolina Rules of Appellate Procedure. Mr. Sawchak graduated with honors from Harvard College and Duke Law School. He was the editor-in-chief of the Duke Law Journal. After law school, he clerked for Justice Clarence Thomas during Justice Thomas’s tenure on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
