    Academy is formed

    Former Florida Supreme Court Justice Arthur England gathers 12 Florida appellate lawyers to form the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers.

    Induction Catch-up in Historic Setting

    At a meeting in Williamsburg, Fellows admitted before the induction ceremony was formalized were inducted in a candlelight ceremony in the Chamber of the House of Burgess, with historic figures appearing in costume and in character, and Arthur England administering the induction charge that he wrote.

    2005

    The National Conference on Appellate Justice

    The Academy was instrumental in initiating, planning, presenting, and funding the National Conference on Appellate Justice, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the original National Conference on Appellate Justice in 2005. Almost 200 judges, practicing lawyers, and academics gathered in small discussion groups and for large group presentations to address the state of appellate law.

    2015

    25th Anniversary Celebration

    The Academy marked its 25th Anniversary with a meeting in Washington D.C. that featured an Anniversary Luncheon with a video featuring images of the first 25 years, and an Induction Dinner in the Great Hall of the Supreme Court Building that included the presentation of the Kathleen McCree Lewis Award for Appellate Justice to Justice Anthony Kennedy by Chief Justice John Roberts.

    A Fellow in Every State

    The Academy finally reaches its long-held goal of including a Fellow in every state in the United States. This realization of this dream of complete geographic diversity paralleled an increased focus on developing diversity in gender, race, and practice type among the Fellows.
