Before she retired in December 2022, Elizabeth White was the Chief of the Appellate Division in the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada. She received her B.A. in 1987 from Macalester College; and received her J.D. in 2002 from Northwestern University School of Law, where she was Editor-in-Chief of the Northwestern University Law Review. Ms. White served as a law clerk to the Honorable Guido Calabresi on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit before joining the Department of Justice in 2003. As an attorney in the appellate section of the DOJ criminal division from 2003-2007, Ms. White argued appeals in eight different circuits. She joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office as an appellate attorney in 2007, and was named chief of the appellate division in 2013. Ms. White has written more than 200 appellate briefs, and has represented the government in argument before the Ninth Circuit more than 90 times. She served as an appellate lawyer representative to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference from 2008-2013, was a member of the Appellate Chiefs’ Working Group of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee from 2015-2019; and as a member of the Ninth Circuit’s Rules Advisory Committee from 2019-2022.
