Ed was born in Dothan, Alabama on December 22, 1962. He worked manual labor jobs growing up (.e.g., shoveling cow manure, bailing hay, working in a machine shop). He graduated as a valedictorian from Northview High School in Dothan in 1981.

Ed graduated first in his class with a B.S. in accounting from the University of Alabama in 1985. He then obtained a Masters in Tax Accounting from the University of Alabama in 1986. He worked in the Tax Department of Ernst & Young for four years.

In 1990, Ed went to the Washington & Lee School of Law and graduated in 1993, magna cum laude. He then clerked for the Honorable E. Grady Jolly of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Firth Circuit for the 1993-94 term of court.

In 1994, Ed went to work for Balch & Bingham LLP in Birmingham as a tax and bond associate. In 1997, Ed went to work as a staff attorney for the Honorable Harold See, Associate Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court.

In 1998, Ed served as Nominations and Constitutional Law Counsel for Chairman Orrin Hatch of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary. In 199-2002, Ed served as Chief Counsel for the Subcommittee on Administrative Oversight and the Courts for Senator Jeff Sessions.

In 2003, Ed came back to Balch & Bingham LLP in Birmingham, Alabama to start that firm’s appellate practice. He works with trial attorneys in trial courts and appellate courts to help posture their cases for a review on the merits, including reviewing and commenting on writing motions and briefs, and arguing motions and appeals. He published annual editions of Alabama Appellate Practice (LexisNexis) since 2013. In 2016, the Alabama Supreme Court justices appointed Ed chairman of Standing Committee on the Alabama Rules of Appellate Procedure.

Ed has two sons: Jackson (15) and Luke (12).
