Practice Focus

Alan Morrison is the Lerner Family Associate Dean for Public Interest & Public Service at George Washington University Law School. For most of his career, he was an attorney with the Public Citizen Litigation Group, which he founded with Ralph Nader in 1972 and directed for most of that time until he retired from there in 2004. A substantial portion of his practice has been devoted to cases at the U.S. Supreme Court, both as lead counsel, co-counsel, or as counsel for an amicus. While at Public Citizen he established a project that assists lawyers with Supreme Court cases who have had little prior experience at the High Court. At GW he continues to provide assistance in a significant number of Supreme Court cases each year, many on a pro bono basis, as well as advising lawyers with cases in other appellate courts. He served as President of AAAL in 1999-2000, and was a 15 year member of the Committee on Science, Technology & Law of the National Academies of Science. In addition to teaching at Stanford, Mr. Morrison has taught at least one semester each academic year since 1978-79 at Harvard, NYU, American, or Hawaii law schools. Mr. Morrison was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy and an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York for almost four years.
